Trump Moves to Evade DACA, We Will Move to Vote Him Out

Progressive Advocates Respond to Trump Administration Memo Changing DACA Policies

Brooklyn, New York -- Yesterday, the Trump administration issued a memorandum laying the groundwork for eliminating the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. The memorandum instructs the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to reject initial DACA applications and limit DACA renewals to one year instead of two years, among other provisions. In response, the Center for Popular Democracy Action released the following statement from Co-Executive Director, Ana Maria Archila.

“Last month, the Supreme Court made it abundantly clear that the Trump administration’s decision to terminate DACA was illegal. However, Trump and the Department of Homeland Security are refusing to honor the Supreme Court decision and are actively working to dismantle the DACA program. The Trump administration’s decision to chip away at DACA should be seen for what it is: another re-election ploy with devastating human consequences for immigrants and their families. Trump is putting the lives of 300,000 undocumented youth at risk of deportation, while at the same time threatening communities advocating to protect Black lives through the deployment of federal agents to cities across the country.

“Congress has been silent. And, each additional day that Congress  fails to establish a permanent solution for DACAmented immigrants and their families, leaves hundreds of thousands of people vulnerable to Trump’s racist ploys. Republicans in Congress are especially to blame. They have acted again and again to block legislation that would protect immigrants and their families from Trump’s irresponsible anti-immigrant policies. But the CPD Action network has a message for Trump and every lawmaker that has failed to act in defense of immigrant families: We will mobilize our families, our neighbors and our communities from now until November to make sure that Trump is a one-term president and to hold members of Congress accountable.”
