“The efforts of the administration to end the census early is yet another attempt to exclude immigrant communities and people of color from our democracy.”

Today, the Supreme Court of the United States ruled that the Trump administration could stop the census count immediately instead of continuing its field operations through October 31st, as it had initially deemed necessary for an accurate count in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.  In response, the Center for Popular Democracy Action released the following statement from co-executive director Ana Maria Archila:

“Over the past year, we have seen how the Trump administration has done everything in its power to undermine an accurate census count.  The efforts of the administration to end the census early is yet another attempt to exclude immigrant communities and people of color from our democracy.

Ending the census count early risks an undercount of hard-to-reach communities that would bind us for a decade, with the potential effects of a redistribution of congressional seats that does not reflect our true population and a reduction of critical funding.  Additionally, by ending the count early, the Trump administration is hoping to rush the submission of results before inauguration, and many fear he will continue to attempt to exclude undocumented community members from apportionment calculations.

Trump’s efforts to erase and exclude our communities will only embolden our resolve to mobilize eligible voters in our communities to cast a ballot by November 3. Trump might wish us out of the country, but today like always, this country is our home and we are here to stay.”
