Statement from the Center for Popular Democracy Action on Senator Romney’s Disgraceful Approval of Trump’s Supreme Court Power Grab

“By attempting to force through this nomination, Republican leadership is displaying their utter disregard for the will of the people”

Brooklyn, NY -- In response to the news that Senator Mitt Romney supports moving forward to fill Justice Ginsburg’s seat before the inauguration, Ana Maria Archila, co-executive director of the Center for Popular Democracy, released the following statement:

“We’re deeply disappointed to see Senator Romney join the ranks of Senator Mitch McConnell and President Trump in engaging in a shameful political power grab by supporting the nomination of a new Supreme Court justice before the inauguration. The legitimacy of the Supreme Court flows directly from voters’ ability to shape its composition through the election of a president and senate. By attempting to force through this nomination, Republican leadership is displaying their utter disregard for the will of the people.

"We deserve to have leaders who respect democracy and put our interests before party politics. Senate Republicans have failed to act with any urgency to alleviate people’s suffering during the COVID-19 pandemic, but are now rushing to install a new justice—a move that will only cause more harm. This chicanery by Republican leadership shows the terrifying extent to which they value their power over the people they represent.”
