CPD Action Reacts to Iowa Caucus Preliminary Results

“The preliminary results are in -- and they prove the enduring strength of Bernie Sanders.”

02.04.2020

DES MOINES, IA -- In response to tonight’s reports that, with 62 percent of precincts reporting, Senator Bernie Sanders is the top vote-getter, CPD Action, a national network of grassroots community organizations who endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders in December, released the following today from Political Director Natalia Salgado:

“It has been a long 24 hours, but the preliminary results are in -- and they show the enduring strength of Bernie Sanders. Sanders has won the popular vote across Iowa -- winning double as many votes as Biden. He also brought more people to the polls than any other candidate. We can trust these numbers as a demonstration of the overwhelming popularity of Senator Sanders.

Sanders’ performance in Iowa proves that Democrats win with a movement -- a movement of Black, Brown, working class, and anti-racist white people who are committed to strengthening our democracy and ridding our system of corporate greed and special interests. Bernie Sanders has inspired Iowa -- and inspired our network -- through visionary policies like Medicare for All, a Green New Deal, ending mass deportations, and restoring the right to vote to people who are incarcerated.

If last night is any indication, the road to victory is long and comes with challenges along the way. While Pete Buttigieg might perform well in the overwhelmingly white state of Iowa, we know that when it comes to more racially diverse states, he does not represent us or have our votes.

We are excited and energized to move into New Hampshire, Nevada, Texas, Minnesota, and Virginia -- states where CPD Action affiliates are mobilizing for Bernie Sanders. We will do the work to bring Black, Brown, working class and anti-racist white people to the polls to vote for Senator Sanders. Our movement is strong. Together, we will bring victory for Bernie Sanders in this primary.”
