The people of Puerto Rico have repeatedly taken to the streets to demand La Junta’s exit and uphold their self-determination for the islands’ future. Today, we follow in their footsteps as we urge Congress to pass the Territorial Relief Under Sustainable Transitions for Puerto Rico Act or TRUST for Puerto Rico Act (TRUST Act), to effectively amend PROMESA by accelerating the exit of the FOMB (“La Junta”) as early as 2024.
This proposed legislation would also provide autonomy for Puerto Rican leadership in authorizing the local legislature to approve a resolution that would create a pathway for La Junta’s functions to be transferred to the government of Puerto Rico when signed by the governor.
Since its imposition, La Junta has used its power to impose devastating austerity measures and facilitate unsustainable debt restructuring plans that enrich Wall Street while actively hurting millions of people in Puerto Rico. La Junta is an abusive body that has supported lowering the minimum wage, closing public schools, gutting essential services, and privatizing our resources – including the power grid, condemning millions to unreliable and dangerous electric conditions. It’s time to Abolish La Junta! We urge Congress to support the TRUST Act to give Puerto Rico an opportunity for a just recovery for the people, by the people.
